Official Synopsis: A father separates his son from his twin sister at birth to prevent him and the mother from knowing she was born with Down syndrome. The birth of a child should be the happiest moment in a couple's life. But when a doctor's wife has twins, one of whom has Down syndrome, this physician makes the difficult decision to send one of his babies away. An attending nurse discovers his plan and intervenes, putting into motion events that will haunt the doc, his wife and his son for the next 20 years.
Our Take:
TV movies are a lost art. Thankfully, we still have Lifetime to carry on the tradition. While sometimes cheesy and definitely on a lower budget than theatrical productions, these movies give us two hours to escape from the real world, and they mesmerize us with the drama in other people’s lives.
The Memory Keeper’s Daughter is a TV movie based on a novel by Kim Edwards and, like most movies based on novels, it doesn’t always do the book justice. That being said, it is a period peace with a compelling story and a fantastic cast (put Dermot Mulroney in anything and I will watch it.)
The DVD lacks special features other than previews of other features from both Lifetime and Sony Pictures.
Lifetime fans and fans of the novel are certain to enjoy The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, even if there are differences between the film and the book. It is a gripping look at how one decision made with the best of intentions can affect the rest of your life.
