Our Take:
Season Three of Stargate: Atlantis is yet another example of why the Stargate franchise is so popular: you just won't find better science fiction on television. The show's third year managed to find a perfect balance in its mix of episodes; it toned down its focus on the Wraith as the central villain and introduced us to new challenges and bad guys every week, while still managing to squeeze in the Wraith and the return of a few familiar faces.

The cast stayed fairly stable this season, although there was one major (and highly traumatic for us fans) character death. The end of the season sets up the upcoming changes in the show: the departure of Tori Higginson and the arrival of SG-1's Amanda Tapping and Firefly/Serenity's Jewel Staite. Things have always been a little bit flux in the Atlantis universe, and while I hate to say goodbye to some beloved characters, I can definitely say that the show has never gotten stale. In fact, it's as exciting as ever.

Just like the Stargate shows are some of the best on television, the Stargate DVD's have always been some of the best TV-on-DVD in terms of bonus materials, and this one is no exception. Here's what comes in the set:

* Commentaries - 19 of the 20 episodes feature commentaries by the usual assortment of cast and crew members.
* Mission Directives - Five making-of featurettes with some of the show's directors.
* Making-Of Featurettes - Five in-depth documentaries focusing on different aspects of the show, including a profile of Rachel Luttrell, a look at the show's aliens and special effects, and General O'Neil's trip to Atlantis.
* Photo Galleries - Each disc includes a photo and production design gallery.

If you've never seen a Stargate show before, it's hard to recommend you jump in here without going back and seeing the first two season first. But if you're even a casual Stargate fan, you're missing out by not enjoying every one of the episodes in Stargate: Atlantis - The Complete Third Season.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
