Our Take:
I’ve watched Smallville since the first season, and every year the series ends on a cliffhanger. Usually, the cliffhanger is resolved in the opening episode of the next season, and then things launch into a decidedly different direction. Smallville: The Complete Seventh Season represents something of a departure from that formula. While it’s true that the Season Six cliffhanger is resolved in the first episode of Season Seven, never in the show’s history have I seen one year transition so seamlessly into the next. Season Seven of Smallville is very much a continuation of the preceding year, and that’s a good thing considering how terrific the sixth season was.

There are a few major new plot points, the biggest being the introduction of Clark’s cousin Kara from Krypton (eventually to be known as Supergirl). The other major element is the introduction of the shadowy Veritas group. But Season Seven also sees the return of Green Arrow (as well as the introduction of Black Canary), and it sees Clark continue on his journey away from being a small-town farm boy and towards becoming a super hero. The look and feel of the entire season is very concurrent with the previous year’s episodes, and the whole experience is not only extremely enjoyable, but it really pays off for long term fans of the show who get to see numerous sub plots come to fruition.

As is usually the case, Smallville: The Complete Seventh Season comes with a few nice bonus features, although nothing is too exciting:

* Cast/Creator Commentaries on 2 Key Episodes - With Miles Millar, Alfred Gough, Ken Horton, Todd Slavkin, Kelly Souders, and Brian Petersonas, as well as actors John Glover and Justin Hartley.

* Unaired Scenes.
* Supergirl: The Last Daughter of Krypton – A history of the character of Supergirl.
* Jimmy on Jimmy - Bringing Together Jimmy Olsens past (Jack Larson and Marc McClure) and present (Aaron Ashmore and Sam Huntington). Easily my favorite feature on the disc.
* Smallville Legends: Kara and the Chronicles of Krypton Mobisodes Gallery – A collection of digital shorts that were originally available on cel phones.
* Smallville: Visions Digital Comic Book.

It’s easy to forget that Smallville is as good a show as it is; it constantly gets overshadowed by more popular genre productions like Lost and more buzzed about teen dramas like Gossip Girl. But Smallville is the only palace where you can find solid genre action and special effects and a great dose of romantic entanglements, all mixed together with comic book homages, primary colors, a sense of humor, and six seasons worth of history to refer to.
