Son Of Rambow

Official Synopsis:
A runaway audience smash at the Sundance Film Festival, SON OF RAMBOW is a hilariously fresh and visually inventive take on friendship, family, film heroes and the death-defying adventures of growing up in the video age. It all begins in 1980s when young Will Proudfoot, encounters something beyond his wildest fantasies: a pirated copy of RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD. His virgin viewing of the iconic thriller blows his mind - and rapidly expanding imagination - wide open. Now, Will sets out to join forces with the seemingly diabolical school bully, Lee Carter, to make their own action epic, devising wildly creative, on-the-fly stunts, not to mention equally elaborate schemes for creating a movie of total commitment and non-stop thrills. But when school popularity finally descends on Will and Lee in the form of, oui, the super-cool French exchange student, Didier Revol, their remarkable new friendship and precious film are pushed, quite literally, to the breaking point.

Our Take:
There isn’t much better than seeing a trailer for Son Of Rambow while sitting in the movie theatre for the newest blood-drenched Rambo flick. Cute family film vs. the most violent movie I’ve ever seen. Despite the opposite ends of the scales these two films sit upon, they’re both great.

Comedian Nick Swardson has a great bit about British kids being that much cuter than American kids and it’s absolutely true. The accents, the terms they use, some of the things these kids say are just so funny or adorable. On the other hand, if these things were said in an American movie it would have seemed stupid. Right off the bat Son Of Rambow had a huge advantage going for it purely for the lead actors’ style of speech.

Not surprisingly, the rest of the film turns out top-notch as well. Son of Rambow is all about childhood friendship and how, for every quiet boy in class, there is an equally obnoxious one and somehow the two always seem to gravitate to each other. In this case it turns out brilliantly as the obnoxious boy wants to make a movie to win a contest and the quiet boy, who isn’t even allowed to watch movies because of his religious upbringing, is overflowing with zany brilliant ideas to fuel the movie.

Special features include:

* Commentary with Director Garth Jennings, Producer Nick Goldsmith, and Cast Members Bill Milner and Will Poulter.

* Aron (11 minutes)  – Garth Jennings’ original short film that inspired Son Of Rambow.

* Boys Will Be Boys: The Making Of Son Of Rambow (26 minutes).

* Son Of Rambow Website Winner (5 minutes) – A short film made by kids.

Son Of Rambow is the type of family film that you can watch even if you’re an adult with no kids and not feel guilty about enjoying it. The little boy who plays Rambow’s dream/fantasy sequences are some of the most inventive and fun things I’ve seen on the screen in a long while.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
